BVER Project: Geospatial Studies in the Basso Verbano

The BVER project (Basso Verbano) was developed to support ArcheoMeMi’s excavation initiatives in the Basso Verbano region, with the aim of contextualizing the investigated sites through geospatial analyses and reconstructing long‑term settlement dynamics in the southern sector of Lake Maggiore.

For this purpose, the project draws on data from the public GNA database – the Geoportale Nazionale per l’Archeologia, designed to create a unified repository of archaeological data for Italy. The GNA dataset has been integrated with information obtained from bibliographic surveys, archaeological maps, and additional public geographical datasets (Copernicus and the Geoportale Nazionale), enabling the development of an inductive predictive model aimed at identifying areas with higher archaeological potential.

The results were compared with regions characterized by similar landscapes. The analyses show that the model is effective, although it does not yet achieve full predictive power—likely due to the absence of certain relevant variables that remain unknown. The study contributes to assessing the reliability of public datasets and highlights the importance of variable selection in the construction of predictive archaeological models.
